Every golfer eventually faces the walk of frustration: toward a ball in a penalty area, out of bounds, or simply lost. You replay the swing in your mind. If only you had aimed farther left. If only you had chosen a different club. If only you could have that shot back.
But golf does not give mulligans when the score matters. You take the penalty, put another ball in play, and continue.
There is an important spiritual lesson in that simple act.
We all make mistakes. Some are small. Others carry consequences that cannot be erased by wishing they never happened. Our instinct may be to hide them, excuse them, blame someone else, or remain stuck replaying them long after the moment has passed.
God offers another way.
First John 1:9 tells us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us.
Confession is not pretending the mistake did not happen. It is bringing it honestly before God and receiving the grace He offers.
Paul heard the Lord say in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you.” (NIV)
Grace does not always remove every earthly consequence. A penalty stroke still appears on the scorecard. But one bad swing does not have to ruin the entire round, and one failure does not have to define an entire life.
Experienced golfers learn to make a decision after a penalty: accept it, refocus, and play the next shot. The worst mistake is often not the ball in the water—it is allowing frustration from that shot to create three more bad swings.
We can do the same spiritually. When you fall short, confess it. Learn from it. Make amends where needed. Then stop trying to replay a shot that is already over.
God’s grace invites you to put the ball back in play.
