There are few lies in golf more frustrating than watching a good drive take one hard bounce and disappear into thick rough. You walk toward the ball hoping for a clean lie, only to find it sitting down in grass that wraps around the clubhead before you ever make contact.
The temptation is to pretend the situation is better than it is. Maybe you can still hit the hero shot. Maybe you can thread a long iron through the trees, carry the bunker, and chase the ball onto the green.
But good golf often begins with accepting the lie you actually have.
Life works the same way. We all find ourselves in places we did not plan to be—after a poor decision, an unexpected disappointment, a strained relationship, or circumstances completely outside our control. We may wish we were back in the fairway, but wishing does not change the lie.
Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (NIV)
Trusting God does not mean pretending the rough is the fairway. It means believing He can guide us from where we are, not merely from where we wish we were.
Sometimes the wisest shot is not toward the flag. It is a controlled punch back into the fairway. That shot may feel unimpressive, but it gives you a chance to recover. Spiritually, God sometimes leads us the same way. The next faithful step may not solve everything at once. It may simply move us out of trouble and into a better position.
Psalm 37:23 teaches that the Lord directs the steps of those who delight in Him. Notice that Scripture speaks of steps—not always giant leaps.
The rough is not the end of the hole. A difficult season is not the end of your story. You may not be able to control the lie, but you can choose your response. Ask God for wisdom, take the shot that is truly available, and trust Him with what comes next.
Reflection
Where in your life are you trying to force a “hero shot” instead of accepting your current situation? Ask God to show you the next wise and faithful step, even if it feels smaller than the one you hoped to take.
