Patience on the Course

Golf is a game of waiting. You wait for the group ahead to clear, you wait for the perfect weather, and sometimes you wait hole after hole for your swing to finally “click.” If you’ve ever been stuck behind a slow foursome or stood over a ball for minutes trying to steady your nerves, you know how golf builds patience. In those moments of frustration – when you’re tempted to honk the cart horn or take a risky shot out of impatience – God might be teaching you a deeper lesson.

The Bible encourages us to cultivate patience. “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2, NIV). On the course, “bearing with one another” might look like letting a slow player take their time or encouraging a friend who’s having a rough round. It means choosing kindness over irritation. This kind of patience isn’t easy, but it honors God and makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.

Think about the last time you rushed a shot or lost your temper in golf. Did it help? Probably not. In life, too, when we hurry ahead of God’s timing, we often end up in a worse position – much like rushing a swing and shanking the ball into the woods. Patience on the course trains us to trust the process. We learn to take a breath, read the wind, and swing with calm confidence. Similarly, in our spiritual walk, we learn to wait on the Lord. Just as a well-timed swing yields a better shot, God’s timing in our lives is always perfect.

Next time you find yourself growing impatient – perhaps stuck in a bunker for the third try or watching your partner line up another practice swing – use that moment to pray. Ask God for a heart that’s “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19, NIV). Embrace the pause as an opportunity to grow. Remember that patience is a virtue both golfers and Christians strive for. With each round, God can shape you into someone a little more patient, a little more gracious. Enjoy the journey, one stroke at a time, knowing that each delay has a purpose in His plan.

Reflection: What test of patience are you facing on or off the course today? How might slowing down and trusting God’s timing improve your outcome? Practice patience during your next round and watch how it transforms your experience.
